It’s always a lot of fun working at Newmarket Holidays, but every two years in March Red Nose Day brings an extra-big grin to our faces, and all in aid of the many great causes supported by Comic Relief.
Last Friday the Newmarket Team took call to ‘do something funny for money’ to heart in a big way – dreaming up a whole host of inventive ways to raise a few pounds in the course of our normal working day.
So, as well as designing our new Newmarket Brochures and booking your coach holidays and ocean cruises we’ve had not one but three cake sales (which we’re pretty sure had something to do with the ever-growing popularity of the Great British Bake Off), a comedy quiz that had people huddled and puzzled at lunchtime, and a Guess the Baby competition that brought a whole new perspective to all our staff photos!
The highlight of the day, though, was the fancy-dress competition. We share a name with a certain famous racecourse, and Friday saw the highlight of the jumping season at the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and so the ingenious minds in charge concocted a competition with a ‘Day at the Races’. The stakes were high, with a pair of tickets to see the West End production of The Bodyguard for the finest specimen of the day, and competition was fierce. Led by the ‘Duchess of Cambridge’, the elegant ladies from the Royal Enclosure had the best of the early running, with the gents in top hats, dapper spectators with flat caps and binoculars, and even a stable of racehorses chasing close behind. By 3pm the two front-runners were neck and neck, and it was only in the finishing stretch that one was able to edge the win by a nose.
So, who was the fancy-dress winner? Well, if you phoned us to book last Friday, you won’t have known that one of the gentlemen helping you book your holiday was dressed in full jockey’s silks, and looking thoroughly resplendent in violet and green!
